How to prepare for your examination
  • Contact your physician’s office and have any previous mammograms sent to ADI prior to your exam.
  • If you’re claustrophobic, ask your physician to write a prescription for sedating medication. You may take pain medication if needed.
  • Contact ADI if you have a pacemaker or any non-removable metallic implants.
  • You may bring CD’s to listen to while being scanned. You may also listen to CD’s from ADI’s collection.

What to expect during your scan
  • Expect to be at ADI for about 45 minutes to one hour.
  • You’ll need to change into a gown.
  • An I.V. will be started containing contrast which is used to help detect breast cancer in the case of dense breasts, implants, malignant lymph nodes, or scarring after treatment for breast cancer, or diagnosis of auspicious breast lesion in order to avoid biopsy.
  • You will lie on your stomach with your arms over your head while you’re being scanned.
  • You’ll hear a few loud noises while you’re being scanned. They’re caused by the interaction of the magnetic fields in the scanner and are not a cause for concern.
  • The results of your exam will be sent to your physician a few days after your scan.

What is a Breast MRI

MRI – or Magnetic Resonance Imaging–is one of your doctor’s most advanced, most accurate medical diagnostic tools. MRI is also the safest diagnostic imaging technique for the detection of breast cancer.

MRI uses a magnet, low-intensity radio waves, and advanced computer software to create detailed images of the tissues inside your body. MRI enables your doctor to see inside your body with precision, from any angle required, providing a great deal of information quickly and economically.
